Annual Learning and Teaching Conference 2012

Learning and teaching: commitment under pressure

Conference 2012 poster

Wednesday 16 May (week 4 summer term)
10.30 am - 4.30pm, Physics/Electronics Exhibition Area

The role of the academic has always been complex and demanding, but is becoming increasingly so with the pressures of student numbers, diversity and fees.  This conference provided an opportunity to consider how we can maintain high quality and intellectually challenging learning and teaching which is not at odds with our other commitments.

Our keynote address was given by Professor Alison Halstead, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching Innovation at Aston University.

Key themes included:

  • Teaching large groups, and providing timely and meaningful feedback;
  • Responding to the employability / the accessibility agenda to benefit all students;
  • Working as a department and supporting colleagues;
  • Bringing mathematical knowledge up to the required level;
  • Keeping up with technological change.
