Beyond the surface: student engagement and deeper learning

This Conference considered approaches to learning and teaching that encourage students to engage more fully with their subject, take a more active role in their own academic and personal development and cultivate a broader, critical view of their position in the world. 

Key themes:

  • Confidence, creativity and pleasure in learning
  • Using technology to promote student engagement and deeper learning
  • Linking learning to practice/real life
  • Developing interdisciplinary learning and teaching 

Our keynote speaker was Ray Land, Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Centre for Academic Practice and Learning Enhancement at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow: 'Threshold concepts and troublesome knowledge: a transformative approach to learning'.

His recent publications include Threshold Concepts and Transformational Learning (with Jan Meyer and Caroline Baillie, 2010), and Threshold Concepts within the Disciplines (with Jan Meyer and Jan Smith, 2008).
