New scholarships for international taught students

Posted on 27 November 2017

The University has launched a new scholarship scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate taught international students.

International students on campus

From September 2018, up to 100 scholarships will be available each year.

Academic Excellence scholarships

The new will offer an award of up to £5,000 for the student’s first year of study.

  • All international (non-EU) offer-holders will be eligible to apply online from Thursday 1 February 2018.
  • The selection criteria will be academic merit.
  • In order to support University objectives for diversity and market development, a certain proportion of scholarships will be reserved for students of specific countries.

Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships

The new Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships will offer an award of £5,000 for each year of study.

  • All international (non-EU) offer-holders will be eligible to apply online from Thursday 1 February 2018.
  • Only those who are expected to achieve the equivalent of AAA at A level or a First for their undergraduate degree will be eligible for an award.
  • Five awards are available for undergraduate students and five for postgraduate taught students.

The new scholarship scheme replaces the previous Scholarship for Overseas Taught Students scheme and academic departments will no longer be required to nominate preferred candidates.

Colleagues in International Recruitment and Marketing are working together to promote the new scholarships to prospective international students and their advisors. You can find full details about the new schemes on the international funding web pages.

University research scholarships

Administration of the Overseas Research Scholarships has moved from the International Recruitment Team in Student Recruitment and Admissions (SRA) to York Graduate Research School (YGRS) and Research Student Administration (RSA).

There is no change to the three types of award available for 2018 entry:

  • Overseas research scholarship, full fee waiver for PhD plus a £5,000-per-year stipend.
  • Scholarship for overseas students, 25 per cent tuition discount on a postgraduate research programme.
  • Scholarship for continuing students, £5,000 tuition discount for the student’s first year of study for York Masters students progressing to a PhD.

Students will no longer need to make a separate application and RSA will advise departments shortly on how to nominate their preferred candidates.
