Our 60 seconds interview with Jake:

Could you please tell us what work you do in the field of mental health?

My doctoral research seeks to better understand how those with complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) experience their sense of self. In my role with Converge, I deliver a philosophy course aimed towards improving outcomes for local adults currently experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

What do you find most rewarding and inspiring in this work?

I enjoy helping develop understanding of a frequently stigmatised mental health condition. I really value peoples’ willingness to share their testimonies as part of research, and am keen to share my findings as widely as possible through public engagement.

What is the most challenging or complicated aspect of this work?

It can be difficult to promote mental health research at a time when clinical support for people is far from readily available. Survivors kindly give up their time to share their experiences, and it can be hard to reconcile that with the fact that many lack adequate help.

What impact do you hope your work is having - or can potentially have?

I hope that my thesis sheds light on a complicated aspect of a misunderstood condition. Ideally, this will lead to conceptual clarification around the diagnosis of CPTSD as well as facilitating empathy for those who experience it. In my teaching role, I hope to inspire people to think of philosophy as a potential tool for recovery.

Could you share with us one piece of advice that you follow for your own mental health?

Make time for playfulness. Life is hard: do something every day that will make you laugh.
