PhD in Biology

Tell us a bit about your background

Hello, my name is Sabrina. I am a PhD researcher in Biology at the University of York, where I also completed my undergraduate degree. Alongside my research, I work in graduate teaching and student support roles across the University.

I work as a Specialist Maths and Sciences Academic Support Worker, supporting students to build confidence, develop academic skills, and work independently in their studies. I also support students with disabilities in higher education to live, study, and thrive, helping them navigate academic and institutional systems.

Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?

I wanted to get involved with the Student Expert Panel because I value genuine student–staff partnership and believe that students’ lived experiences should directly inform university decision-making. Through my work supporting students from diverse
backgrounds, I have seen how gaps in communication, accessibility, and institutional processes can create barriers to participation and success.

The Student Expert Panel provides a meaningful space for student voices to shape policy and practice, particularly in relation to access, inclusion, and belonging. I am motivated to contribute to work that helps connect student insight with existing university initiatives and
ensures that support and opportunities are visible, accessible, and responsive to students’ needs.

What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?

At York, I am involved in graduate teaching and academic support, working closely with students across disciplines to support learning, skills development, and independent study. I also work with students with disabilities to help create inclusive learning experiences and
improve access to university systems and services.

Outside my studies and work, I enjoy reading and spending time with my guinea pigs, Mister Potato and Harold. I am also interested in community engagement and enjoy supporting people facing language barriers to improve access to opportunities.
