Tell us a bit about your background
I'm a second year Law student from London, and I've been in an all girls grammar school before coming to University, so it was very interesting coming to York and adjusting to a new culture of education in a new city. I've always been interested in panel and voluntary posts, having sat on them before, and especially as a young black woman in a predominantly white city, it will certainly be an enriching experience sitting on the SEP.
Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?
Due to my previous experience sitting on student panels, specifically an anti-racism youth panel from 2021, I thought that this opportunity would be excellent to bring my expertise into. The SEP is an essential part of the University's successful functionality, to ensure that changes that affect the student body are reviewed and implemented by students, so I was eager to get involved and contribute to this fantastic cause.
What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?
I currently sit as Chair of the Langwith College STYM Committee, which has been a rewarding and engaging experience so far. I intend to bring some of the skills I developed to this role, as my role as Chair involves meeting and supporting students from across the College. Additionally, I have been an active member of York Law Society and York African Caribbean Society, which have each introduced me to a variety of talented, intelligent individuals across the student body. Alongside this, I recently founded my own radio show which focuses on music from black artists, one of the firsts of its kind. I've always been interested in politics, anthropology and sociology alongside this, so I also like to read a range of articles and books on these topics regularly.
