Programme of study
PhD in Archaeology
Tell us a bit about your background
Hi, my name is Niamh and I am a third-year PhD student in the Archaeology department's Heritage for Global Challenges Research Centre at the University of York. My PhD is focused on disability heritage, and I am one of the team members running the UK Disability History and Heritage Hub. I was also the EDI rep for the history department at Durham University, where I completed my Undergraduate and Master's degrees.
Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?
I have worked with different groups at the university previously to tackle various issues which are important to me, such as disability rights and access, LGBTQ+ rights, and accommodation. I wanted to get involved with the panel in order to continue this work and to support others who are trying to do the same.
What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?
At York, I have worked with the DISCO project in order to produce a toolkit for increasing disability access in research projects (which recently won a York Impact Award!). I also ran a vigil for National Disability Day of Mourning last year and have been active in various forms of community organising including queer mutiny 2025..
Outside of my studies, I am a keen climber and I enjoy crocheting. I am also currently in the process of training my service dog Maple who will be a common fixture at SEP events.
