Programme of study
BA Criminology
Tell us a bit about your background
I am a third-year Criminology student from a small village in the North West, and growing up there sparked my interest in people, communities, and the social issues that shape everyday life. Before coming to York, I studied Criminology at college, which strengthened my interest in topics such as justice, inequality, and how different social backgrounds influence experiences.
Coming to York has given me the chance to meet people from a wide range of backgrounds, and I've really appreciated the opportunity to learn from perspectives different from my own. This has continued to shape my interest in Criminology and the way society responds to crime and social changes.
Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?
I wanted to get involved with the Student Expert Panel because I think it's important for the University to hear from students with a range of experiences, including those who may come up against additional barriers. I've seen how meaningful it can be when students feel listened to, and I wanted to contribute to that process by sharing my own perspective.
Being part of the panel gives me the opportunity to help highlight areas where support and communication can be strengthened and to contribute to a more inclusive environmental overall. I'm particularly interested in ensuring that diverse voices and experiences are recognised, represented, and taken into account in decisions that affect students.
What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?
Although I am not currently involved in any societies at York, I have found my own ways to stay active and connected outside of my studies. Running is a big part of my life; my housemate and I run a women's night run club, and have completed several half marathons in the past year. I'm hoping to work towards a full marathon in the next few years (fingers crossed).
Outside of my studies, I enjoy hiking, exploring new places, travelling, and social nights with friends. Looking ahead, I hope to use my Criminology degree to contribute to meaningful social change, and the activities I enjoy outside my studies continue to motivate and shape my goals for the future.
