Tell us a bit about your background
Hi, I’m Lucie, a first-generation university student from Northamptonshire in the East Midlands. I'm a student with a chronic condition who has experienced periods of disruption in my education.
I have had an interest in the big questions since I was young, and studying my degree has shown me what I'm passionate about. I hope to teach religious education post university and share my passion for knowledge and inclusion.
Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?
I am a big believer in equity and access for all people in higher education. Coming to university, I was shocked to find a culture of division between students from different backgrounds, with prejudice and lack of connection being a big contributor.
The SEP appealed to me as an opportunity to highlight issues faced by groups on campus while offering my perspective on how students navigate university life. It has proved to be a great experience that allows us as individuals, who might otherwise go unrepresented, to be an active part in generating and utilising opportunities for students whose starting point may be vastly different than average.
What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?
I am one of the head proofreaders for the university's literature anthology (The Looking Glass). I have a real passion for writing poetry and have had poems published in a few different anthologies! Outside of academics, I love comics and art, including costume and prop making. More than anything, I love my degree, and you can probably find me around campus talking too loudly about Anselm or metaphysics!
