Tell us a bit about your background

I’m a first-generation university student commuting from my hometown of Harrogate, just a short distance from York. After my dad passed away in 2018 during my GCSEs, I chose to stay close to my mum, who lives with a chronic illness, so I could continue supporting her.

From a young age, I’ve been fascinated by science and driven by a desire to help others. I recently returned to York after completing an industrial placement year in medical affairs, which further fuelled my passion for public health and improving access to medicines, particularly for those who lack access to a gold standard treatment for their conditions.

Why did you want to get involved with the Student Expert Panel?

I wanted to get involved with the Student Expert Panel because I am deeply passionate about advocating for social mobility. Growing up working class, I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges that students from less advantaged backgrounds face in accessing opportunities, both in education and as they transition into their early careers.

My experience working in the corporate world was eye-opening, revealing how often social mobility is overlooked as a critical diversity factor. I’m committed to raising awareness and driving change, striving to create meaningful opportunities that foster a more inclusive environment for students while helping to break down the barriers many still face.

What are you involved with at York, and what are you interested in outside of your studies?

Outside of my studies and my role as a marketing manager for a life science talent strategy startup, I stay active through swimming and spin classes to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Before my placement year, I worked with the University’s Global Programmes team, where I coordinated and led a range of activities to support students transitioning to study in the UK. I also provided guidance on further study opportunities, scholarships, and studying abroad, engaging directly with students throughout the process.
