When to recruit from the University of York

Two students walking along the York City Walls talking with one another.

When is the best time to recruit York students?

  • Start of the Year: September
  • Semester 1: September-January
  • Semester 2: February-June

At York, we are keen to work with you to make the most of your recruitment. To support this, we have highlighted the most effective points in the year to advertise your vacancies and promote your opportunities.

The Common Assessment Period

During the revision and assessment period, we find that students are less actively searching for roles and opportunities. The common assessment period for undergraduate students is the last three weeks of each semester.

You can find the dates for the revision and assessment period on the semesters page

Holidays

Students often leave York for the vacation period and there is less activity on our careers platform, Handshake. We recommend that you post your opportunities to Handshake once the students have returned to campus after the Christmas and Easter vacations to ensure as much engagement as possible.

Details of the vacation periods are available on the semester dates page.

Working alongside their studies

While studying, York students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week if they are a full-time student. Part-time postgraduate students may be able to work longer hours. Please be aware that international students will also have requirements to meet against their visa, usually a maximum of 20 hours per week in semester time.

If you would like to advertise your opportunities to our students, please see the information about advertising vacancies on Handshake.
