Tangled Feet: Participatory and Therapeutic Theatre Methodology

This will be a practical and discursive workshop exploring how Tangled Feet co-create work with young participants, intergenerational casts and teenagers. Through games, exercises and devising methods this workshop explores how to inspire performance and creative ideas from groups of ‘non professional performers’ and how their lived experience can inspire dramaturgy, storytelling and creativity. The workshop will also cover Tangled Feet’s Therapeutic Theatre Model whereby they create work through Dramatherapeutic methods.

About the performer
Nathan Curry
Nathan is a theatre director, creative producer and arts programmer. He is the Co-Artistic Director and CEO of Tangled Feet theatre ensemble. Previously, he was the Associate Director of The Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, the Associate Director of The Bush Theatre and a Staff Director at The National Theatre.
Since founding Tangled Feet (www.tangledfeet.com) in 2003 Nathan has directed 26 productions for the company as they have become on of the most distinctive theatre ensembles in the country. Their work has toured the UK, Europe and the Middle East alongside an industry leading participation and Dramatherapy programme that works with thousands of young people each year. Tangled Feet make original physical theatre and image led work in public places, found spaces and theatre buildings and are a dedicated ensemble with a commitment to shared rehearsal and performance history. In 2018 Tangled Feet joined the Arts Council’s National Portfolio of core funded companies, they are based in Luton.
As Associate Director of Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (2011-2015) Nathan supported the programming of one of Europe’s largest outdoor arts festivals. His work at the festival focused on the development and support of emerging talent and partnership programming.
As Associate Director of The Bush Theatre (2009-2011) Nathan worked with many leading playwrights, developing new work and directing performances. He was part of the team that successfully moved the theatre from its old pub location to new library home.

As a Director Nathan relishes work with political narratives, visually strong staging and ensemble storytelling. Nathan believes in creating theatre that explores tensions in the world, reaches new audiences and is meaningful to the people who make it and watch it. Nathan has developed a number of projects with the National Theatre Studio, The British Council (Libya, Egypt) and many leading Drama Schools.
Nathan trained at Middlesex University and subsequently received training from The National Theatre Studio Directors Course, The Royal Shakespeare Company (with Cicely Berry) and The Stary Theatre, Krakow. Nathan has been a Trustee at The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre in Havant since January 2017. He lives In Muswell Hill, North London.
