Introduction
A reasonable adjustment is a change made to a student's study to ensure they can fully participate in their education. If a student has a disability, long-term health condition, or specific learning difficulty (SpLD), Disability Services will put in place a Student Support Plan (SSP) which includes these recommended academic adjustments.
This page provides guidance for staff on how to view, understand, and implement these adjustments.

Understanding Adjustments and Confidentiality
- What are adjustments? Adjustments are intended to help ensure disabled students are not disadvantaged compared to their peers. They address a disability-related issue, not an ability 'gap'.
- Confidentiality: Disability-related information is classed as 'sensitive personal data'. Specific medical details are not always required to be included in an SSP, and staff must process this data in accordance with data protection laws. Staff cannot give out information about a student to a third party without express permission.
- Equality Act 2010: Implementing reasonable adjustments is a legal requirement to ensure disabled students have an equal opportunity to fully access their studies.
Staff Roles and Responsibilities
Different staff members have different levels of access and responsibility regarding SSPs:
- Teaching and Academic Staff: Responsible for reviewing the SSPs of students on their modules and ensuring that everyday teaching adjustments (e.g., providing materials in advance, accommodating Read&Write software) are met.
- Departmental Superusers: Responsible for managing access levels within their department. Superusers use the Component Manager in e:vision to assign or archive staff viewing permissions.
- Chair of Board of Studies (CBOS) / Library Staff: Have specific tailored access to view adjustments relevant to their departmental or service oversight.
