Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Sociology Diversity Champion and Disability Chair: carol.robinson@york.ac.uk

Equality and Diversity Research

Equality and diversity are fundamentally central to our research community, and to the nature of the research that we undertake. We have produced extensive research on gender, sexuality and inequality and hope that our research can help to address the significant inequalities that underpin society. For example, Paul Johnson's work on sexual orientation equality and law is recognised as having led to significant legislative change.

Equality Committee

Our Equalities Committee both monitors and promotes the Department’s approach to inclusion, including generating all necessary data and background material for our Athena Swan accreditation. Our Athena Swan lead and diversity champion Carol Robinson can be contacted via email: carol.robinson@york.ac.uk

Staff Equality

It is the department's policy to proactively encourage women to apply for promotion and we are proud to announce that our data shows gender equality among our teaching, research and leadership staff.

We also have a range of mechanisms to encourage work/life balance for our staff, including: flexible temporary and permanent part-time working, flexible working hours, core hours to facilitate childcare, and accommodating reasonable adjustments for individual circumstances including for disability.
