In 2024, there are a number of external opportunities and secondments available to academics and university staff looking to apply their skills and knowledge in a non-academic setting.

This page will be kept up to date with some of the most prominent opportunities available over the course of the year.

Roles

Knowledge Exchange Unit thematic leads

Over 2023, Parliament and the ESRC piloted a new role in Parliament: the Thematic Research Lead. Evidence suggests that these prestigious and influential roles are making a positive impact. As a result, in 2024, Parliament will partner with UKRI to expand Parliament’s network of Thematic Research Leads across a wider range of academic disciplines and policy areas.

Roles available: eight part time positions from a broad range of scientific and research disciplines

Duration of role: September 2024 - Summer 2026

UK Research & Innovation Policy fellowships (2024 date TBC)

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) policy fellowships provide funding to collaborate with a UK or devolved government host to address pressing national and global challenges.

This high-profile initiative provides a route for you to bring your expertise to bear on critical policy challenges at the heart of government across the UK. As well as to generate new insights into how to best support effective collaboration and knowledge exchange that will shape your career as well as support wider change. These fellowships are demanding and intellectually stimulating roles, providing an exciting opportunity to combine your specialist knowledge and research expertise with the opportunity to inform decision-makers at the heart of policymaking.
