Help with social security benefit appeals on offer

The new service will be launched on 1 November, with the York Law School anticipating a high demand for its new specialist tribunal representation service.

Advice and help, including representation at the tribunal itself, will be offered by student advisors – all studying law at the University - who have gone through specialist training in this area. In line with all services offered by the York Law School Clinic, the students will be under the direct supervision of qualified lawyers.
Solicitor Richard Grimes, the University’s Director of Clinical Programmes, said: "This is very much a niche area of law which relatively few lawyers have experience in. There is also no legal aid for such cases and few benefit claimants can afford to pay a lawyer to help."
The law students will interview clients, then after consulting with their supervisors, provide written advice, informing clients of their position and what their options are.
The Clinic is based in the York Law School, recently ranked second among all university law schools by the Sunday Times University Guide 2012. Part of the University's £750 million Heslington East campus expansion, the York Law School Clinic opened last year.
