University staff feature in the New Year Honours List

The work of three members of staff at the University of York has been recognised in the New Year Honours List.

The work of three members of staff at the University of York has been recognised in the New Year Honours List. 

Dave Coulthard, a senior technician in the Department of Physics, is made an MBE for services to science communication. He played a key role in establishing an after-school science club at Knavesmire Primary School, andhelped to develop the idea for a solar system cycleway between York and Selby as a Millennium project. 

Professor John McDermid, head of the Department of Computer Science since 2006, whose primary research interests are in high integrity computer systems especially in safety and security, is made an OBE for services to the defence industry. 

Professor Alastair Fitter, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, whose research has focused on biological responses to climate change, is made a CBE for services to environmental science. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2005. 

Meanwhile, Professor John Holman, who was previously Professor of Chemical Education in the Department of Chemistry, and is now director of the National Science Learning Centre which is located on the University's campus, was knighted in the Honours List.
