Palestinian refugees and the search for peace

Posted on 5 November 2009

The effects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the prospects for peace will be the subject of a lecture by the senior United Nations figure working with Palestinian refugees.

Karen Koning AbuZayd, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, will deliver this year's El Hassan bin Talal Annual Lecture in Post-war Reconstruction and Development at the University of York.

She will use her lecture to review the conditions in which Palestinian refugees live and discuss the effects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the implications for human rights and international law.

Ms AbuZayd will offer her assessment of the trends of the peace process to date and the prospects for a negotiated settlement in the light of recent developments in the region. She will also raise questions about the place of the refugee issue in the search for peace.

The Commissioner-General has led UNRWA since 2000. From her base in Gaza, she helps to oversee education, health, social services and micro-enterprise programmes for 4.6 million Palestinian refugees.

This is the second annual lecture in a series launched last year by Prince El Hassan Bin Talal of Jordan and hosted by the University’s Post-war Reconstruction and Development Unit.

Admission to the lecture, on 6 November, is by free ticket only available from the University of York Communications Office on (01904) 432622 or publiclectures@york.ac.uk.
