Greg Dyke, York graduate, to be new Director General of the BBC

Posted on 25 June 1999

Greg Dyke, Chairman and Chief Executive of Pearson Television, is to be the new Director General of the BBC.

Mr Dyke, who graduated with a degree in politics from the University of York in 1974, is to receive an honorary degree from the University on Thursday 8 July. The degree of Doctor of the University will be conferred on him by the University's Chancellor Dame Janet Baker at a graduation ceremony in Central Hall on the University's campus.

"I am delighted to hear of Greg's appointment," said Professor Ron Cooke, Vice-Chancellor. "He came to York as a mature student with few qualifications in 1971 and flourished, finding - like so many others - that York offered distinctive and wide-ranging opportunities. The timing of this announcement, two weeks before he receives an honorary degree from York, is a very happy coincidence and we look forward to welcoming him back to his alma mater."
