Genesis: a location for a new generation

Posted on 18 September 1997

Genesis, six buildings for innovative new businesses, is opened today (3 October) by John Robinson, Chairman of Smith & Nephew plc.

It is the latest development on York Science Park, home to the city's Innovation Centre and to Smith & Nephew's Group Research Centre. Situated next to the University of York's campus, all businesses have easy access to and shared facilities with, the University's prestigious science departments.

The Genesis buildings open with six companies on site. Some, like Terrington Systems Ltd, have moved across from the Innovation Centre, an incubator for start-up technology-based industry. Other companies on site include English Nature and the design consultancy, Ideas.

Genesis signals potential job creation for the city of York of around 170 in the next year. York Science Park has itself created 285 jobs since it opened.

"Genesis provides a home for a new generation of business in York," said Professor Tony Robards of the University of York. "We already have the Innovation Centre for start-up companies. Genesis provides larger premises for the success stories of the Innovation Centre and acts as a magnet for established enterprises. Many of these will be science or technology-based and will benefit from close connections with other Science Park tenants and with the University."

Notes to editors:

  • Genesis comprises a terrace of five two storey buildings ranging from 3,065 sq ft to 4,080 sq ft, together with a separate building of 4,000 sq ft. The development is in its own landscaped area incorporating dedicated car and cycle parking.

  • The University of York has a strong reputation for innovation and original research in the sciences. Its science departments all have official Research Assessment ratings of 4, 5 and 5*, signalling research of international significance.
