Scholarships: PhD in Global Development

Funding available for students applying to study our PhD in Global Development for 2021/22 entry.

We are pleased to announce the following scholarships are open to applicants from the PhD in Global Development 

The White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership (WR DTP). 

Application deadline: 27 January 2021 5pm (GMT) 

There are two types of award:

  • +3 programme: funding for a three-year PhD (assumes that the applicant has already met the majority of the core social sciences research methods training requirements and that the PhD focus is largely on more advanced training)
  • 1+3 programme: an integrated Masters programme precedes the three-year PhD which will deliver the core social sciences research methods training requirements. 

This funding stream is open for both UK and International students (including EU students). All students are eligible to receive a full award, to include a stipend and fees at the home level.

This award is for social science projects that fall under the  ESRC's eligibility criteria as set out in the ESRC Postgraduate Funding Guide. You should read the ESRC guidance carefully before applying.

Please note: Applicants should have applied to the PhD in Global Development before applying for a White Rose Social Sciences DTP scholarship. Those applying to the 1+3 programme should also have applied to the MA Social Research. The White Rose College of Arts and Humanities 

Application deadline: 27 January 2021 5pm (GMT) 

This award is for projects grounded in the arts and humanities. The project has to fall within the remit of the AHRC

This funding stream is open for both UK and International students. All students are eligible to receive a full award, to include a stipend and fees at the home level. International students will need to find the difference between the International and Home fee rate from alternative sources.

The York Graduate Research School Scholarships for International Students 

Application deadline: 29 January 2021. 

These scholarships are available to applicants who are liable to pay fees at the international rate (this includes EU students) and plan to commence their doctoral studies during the 2021/2 academic year

To be considered for these scholarships, applicants should do the following:

Apply online for the PhD in global development by Friday 29 January 2021. When applying for the PhD, applicants should select the 'UoY Overseas Research Scholarship' option from the drop-down menu when asked how they intend to finance their studies.

If you have already applied to the PhD in Global Development, but wish to be considered for the scholarships, please send an email to liz.obrien@york.ac.uk and they will amend your application record.

These prestigious scholarships normally offer the following for each successful year of the enrolment period:

  • a full fee waiver
  • a stipend commensurate with the UKRI rate 
  • a research training support grant (RTSG).

The IGDC can nominate only one candidate to the scholarship committee, which will assess scholarships on the following criteria:

  • academic excellence
  • how the research project fits with the department’s research or international strategy
  • how the research project fits with the University’s research or international strategy.
