Laidlaw Scholars Programme 2020

News | Posted on Tuesday 15 October 2019

We are delighted to advise that applications for the fourth Cohort of the Laidlaw Scholars programme will open on 10 January 2020.

The Laidlaw Scholars programme gives undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a unique research project and an innovative and accredited leadership development programme.  The Programme is open to all undergraduate students in year 1 of a three year programme or year 1 or 2 of a four year programme.  Scholars are generously funded during the research period(s) and, by the end of the scholarship, will achieve a Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management with the Chartered Management Institute. Students apply by proposing their own project, with an identified academic supervisor to support them.

There will be some changes to the Programme for the 4th Cohort with Scholars undertaking 5/6 weeks of funded research in Year 1 (2020). In Year 2 (2021) they will now follow a Leadership in Action programme to embed leadership skills, either by continuing with their research (with an additional dimension such as an international experience, public engagement or in-field application), or they apply to join a leadership expedition (up to 10 places will be available) which will involve volunteering for four weeks in a remote community in Africa or Asia. In this case the scholarship funding will be used to cover the expenses for the expedition.

Students are to apply for the Scholarship with a project that can be completed over two summers but will offer Scholars the opportunity to apply to the leadership expedition after their first summer, if they wish, as an alternative to continuing with their research project.
