The IGDC would like to formally welcome Dr. Maria Eugenia Giraudo, who joined us in June 2018!

Maria Eugenia Giraudo joined the IGDC as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in June 2018. She has an MA in International Political Economy and a PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick. Before her studies at Warwick, she worked as an Academic Coordinator and Assistant at the Argentine Council for International Relations in Buenos Aires.

Maria Eugenia’s doctoral thesis explores the uneven outcomes of the latest commodity boom and global food crises of South American countries. Her research interests include natural resource governance and development, focusing on how countries of South America govern commodity booms. She is also currently a member of the Editorial Board ofAlternautas: (Re) Searching Development, a blog that addresses issues of development in Latin America.

Her latest published work explores how neoliberal state restructuring needs an interdisciplinary approach.“Depoliticizing space: The politics of governing global finance” addresses the case of Margaret Thatcher’s 1986 Finance Act and how neoliberal state restructuring can be understood as the coalescence of two different spatial governing strategies.

Maria Eugenia is also leading a series of research seminars for staff and students at IGDC for this term. Stay tuned and check our website for more news on Maria Eugenia’s work and future events!
