The IGDC to launch exciting new interdisciplinary PhD programme in 2019/20

The IGDC is set to launch exciting new interdisciplinary PhD programme.

Major challenges in global development, ranging from access to clean water to reducing gender inequality, cannot be addressed by any single discipline. The IGDC’s PhD in Global Development, which will start in 2019/20, will provide students with the interdisciplinary tools and skills for a holistic approach to major development challenges. Students will be located in the new IGDC supervised by a supervisory team by departments and be offered training in methodologies that enable them to address development problems through multiple lenses. Approaches we will foster through this programme include problem based learning, archival and documentary research, visual methods, quantitative and statistical methods, ethnography, interviews, focus groups and secondary data analysis. In all cases students will encourage to spend significant periods of time doing fieldwork sometimes in-conjunction with a local organisation or NGO. Students will gain conceptual and practical knowledge and skills and will participate in the Centre’s research activities, seminars and workshops. Two full bursaries for full-time study are available, for students beginning in 2019-20.
