Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) Summer Launch

The Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre was officially launched on Monday 4 June in what was an eventful afternoon of networking, research presentations and film previews. Over a hundred attendees from the three faculties and research support staff packed into the Environment Auditorium to hear more about the new Centre and its plans to make the University of York one of the leading places for development research.

The launch started with a speech from the PVC for Research, Professor Debbie Smith, who stressed the IGDC’s aim of working across the disciplines to address some of the big challenges of our time.

Following this, Professor Paul Cooke, Centenary Chair of World Cinemas at the University of Leeds gave any inspiring keynote speech about his interdisciplinary development work that engages young people in participatory film-making for advocacy, zooming in on his project ‘Changing the Story’.

The IGDC research areas of Citizenship, Development Alternatives, Governance, Health and Wellbeing and Sustainability were highlighted in short presentations by IGDC postdoctoral fellows, Dr Ingrid Harvold-Kvangraven and Dr Alan Msosa, and by IGDC Co-Director, Professor Piran White. The presentations gave a  flavour of the range of projects undertaken by IGDC members ranging from Caribbean coastlines to African health systems.

The launch ended with an interactive research sharing session that allowed attendees to share their research agendas and build links with colleagues from other departments and centres.
