We are delighted that Dr Martin Milton, Director of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, has been awarded an Honorary Professorship starting this summer. Dr Milton’s scientific expertise ranges from the principles of traceability, the fundamental constants, ultra-sensitive Raman and mass spectrometry through to environmental monitoring and high accuracy gas measurements. He has previously collaborated with our atmospheric chemistry group to develop standards for long-term monitoring of atmospheric composition.
As Head of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, commonly referred to by its French name ‘Bureau international des poids et mesures’ or BIPM, Dr Milton holds a high profile international role. The BIPM is tasked with ensuring worldwide uniformity of measurements and their traceability to the International System of Units (SI). It takes part in, and organises, international comparisons of national measurement standards and performs calibrations for member states.
