Small Talks for Big Change

News | Posted on Wednesday 7 June 2023

During these 6 virtual talks speakers from the African continent discuss de- and postcolonial perspectives on- and lived experiences of inequality in collaborations with the Global North. The series aims to be a starting point for a deeper body of work in the next academic year, and for forming a supportive network of researchers in Africa and the UK engaged in the pursuit of transformative research collaborations.

The Perivoli Africa Research Centre (PARC) and Inclusive Research Collective (IRC) are currently collaborating on an Enhancing Research Culture funded project to examine the power imbalances within research collaborations.
Following an initial seminar, which introduced the work of PARC and the series aims, the remaining events aim to briefly explore each of the multiple layers of power imbalances in research collaborations.
These include asymmetries in practical collaboration arrangements; the dominance of Western-centric epistemologies, languages, theories and concepts; the underlying development frame, and the huge disparities in institutional resourcing. The final event will speak to the need to go beyond current models of equitable collaborative models and the development of an Africa-centred Charter and guiding framework for transforming research collaborations with Africa.
