On Friday 7th June 2019, nearly 40 participants attended the 'Researching Africa: Pragmatics, Ethics and Partnerships' day, funded by the Research Centre for Social Sciences, University of York.

The full programme can be found here. Three invited keynote speakers gave presentations:

    • Professor Patricia Daley (University of Oxford) – Decolonizing methodologies in African Studies: Towards an agenda for researchers from the global North
    • Dr Jason Mosley (Managing Editor, Journal of Eastern African Studies) – How to get published
    • Dr Jane Humphris (Director, British Institute in Eastern Africa) - Ethical approaches to Africa's heritage

The day went really smoothly with lots of great presentations and excellent questions and discussion. If we could change one thing it would be to have more time to continue all the great conversations.

The organisational committee did a great job. Well done to Margaret Gamberton for visualising the day and pulling it all together; Peter O'Reilly for handling IT and communications; Ruth Kelly for chairing and encouraging discussion; Anna Adima and George Juma Ondeng' for organising keynote speakers; Lucian for handling dinner and Nicole Beardsworth for guidance and mentoring.
