Role of external assessors

External assessors are approved by the UTC following suitable departmental nominations. Involvement of suitably experienced peers from outside of the institution helps assure UTC that the quality and standards of the disciplinary provision and student experience are comparable with appropriate institutions.

An external assessor will consider:

  • the appropriateness of overall programme aims in the context of the discipline (nationally/internationally)
  • the appropriateness of programme content and student achievement on the associated programmes in comparison with similar programmes offered elsewhere
  • the relevance of the programmes in relation to acknowledged needs of the discipline
  • the future enhancement in relation to national and international best practice

Two external assessors join each periodic review panel which is made up of three internal members:

  • a Chair, appointed from UTC members
  • the relevant departmental contact
  • a suitably qualified student representative
