PhD funding

We are one of the largest and most influential Sociology departments in the UK. Research is at the heart of what we do, and we pride ourselves on research that makes a difference and drives forwards knowledge and understanding of Sociology on a global scale.

The Department works to maximise the amount of financial support available to PhD students, and is proud to be able to offer a range of funding opportunities.

Departmental Funding PGR

PhD Sociology Studentship

The Department of Sociology has funding available to support one full-time campus-based PhD studentship. Successful applicants will receive a stipend in line with UKRI rates (currently £19,237 per year) and a fee waiver at the home student rate for three years.

ONAOSI Foundation Scholarship

We're proud to offer limited National Opera for the Assistance of Italian Health Orphans scholarships for students entering a one-year taught or research Masters.

  • Funding: Full tuition fee waiver
  • Academic year: 2023/24
  • Open to: Students from Italy
  • Number available: 3 plus two beneficiaries may obtain a 30% tuition

Commonwealth Scholarship

The University of York is a host university for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Various opportunities are available throughout the year. The majority of awards are funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

  • Open to: Students from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize and more (see eligibility)

John Monash Scholarship

The John Monash Scholarship provides yearly funding to outstanding postgraduate taught and research students from Australia.

  • Funding: $75,000 AUD for each year of study
  • Academic year: 2024/25
  • Application deadline: Saturday 20 July 2024, 5pm BST
  • Open to: Students from Australia
  • Number available: 10-20

Tan Kah Kee Scholarship

The Tan Kah Kee Scholarship offers postgraduate scholarships for Singapore citizens and permanent residents pursuing full-time PhD or Masters degrees.

  • Funding: $12,000
  • Academic year: 2024/25
  • Application deadline: Friday 31 May 2024, 11.30am BST
  • Open to: Students from Singapore

White Rose Social Sciences Doctoral Training Partnership

The Economic and Social Research Council White Rose DTP is a regional consortium of seven universities with social science research excellence and involves the universities of Sheffield, Leeds and York as well as Bradford, Hull, Manchester Metropolitan and Sheffield Hallam.

  • Funding: ESRC stipend (£18662 in 2023/24) plus full fee waiver
  • Academic year: 2024/25
