Travel to York

Airports

There are a number of airports that have good access links to York although for ease of access and journey times we would recommend Manchester airport. Please click here to view the airports and their location to York which is in the North East of the UK.

York is on the main East Coast main railway line which links London's Kings Cross station with Edinburgh. Tickets should be booked well in advance to avoid high charges on the day. Most train companies sell tickets through their own websites, but a convenient site for all tickets is the train line. If coming from the UK we recommend coming by rail as this will avoid finding places to park.

Manchester

From Manchester International Airport (MIA) there are direct trains to York every 30 to 60 minutes, which take around 1 hour 50 minutes. You can book trains to and from Manchester airport in advance from either Transpennine Express or the train line.

London Heathrow

Getting from Heathrow to York is in two stages: Heathrow to Kings Cross station, followed by a train from Kings Cross to York.

From Heathrow, take the Picadilly line (dark blue) direct from Heathrow to Kings Cross station. You can buy tickets at the station for £6.00 return, the trains go every few minutes, and take around 1 hour. Click here for a map of the tube

A slightly faster and more comfortable route to Kings Cross is to take the Heathrow Express to Kings Cross Station for approximately £25, the trains go every few minutes, and take around 1 hour.

From Kings Cross station, there are regular direct trains to York around every 30 minutes. You need to book well in advance to avoid the very high charges for buying tickets on the day. Tickets can be booked through the train line and then collected at the station from ticket machines. The journey from Kings Cross to York takes 2 hours, and the last train usually departs London at around 10pm.

Leeds Bradford

The closest airport to York is Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) which is around 1 hour from York by taxi. Several airlines fly to Leeds. The taxi to York costs around £55 one-way if booked and paid in advance through Streamline taxis (+44 (0) 1904 656565 ), they will charge a 10% surcharge for card payments. There is also the FLYER A1 bus to Leeds train station from Leeds Bradford Airport, and then a direct train to York (25 minutes). You should book train tickets in advance from either Transpennine Express or the train line.

For large international flights, the most convenient airports are London's Heathrow airport (LHR), and Manchester International Airport (MIA).
