Promoting inclusion for people with learning disabilities

Posted on 16 January 2006

A workshop, hosted by the University of York, promoting inclusion for people with learning difficulties, will have an international dimension. The principal speakers at the event, at the Priory Street Centre in York, are Canadians Jack Pearpoint and Lynda Khan, experts on person-centred approaches to planning services for individuals.

The one-day event, on 9 February is an opportunity for people working in health and social care services, carers and people with learning disabilities to discuss ideas in promoting inclusion for people with learning disabilities.

The Government White Paper, Valuing People (2001), set out its plans for improving the lives of people with learning disabilities, their families and carers. An important feature of the proposals is 'person-centred planning' - a process of life planning for individuals, which involves listening to people to establish what they want from their lives and helping them to achieve their aims.

Paul Evans, event organiser, said: "The Department of Health Sciences at the University of York has been recognised by the Valuing People Support Team nationally for its ground-breaking work in developing training modules in Person-Centred Planning. We're very excited to welcome these experts on inclusion."
