Another perfect teaching score

Posted on 12 November 1999

The Physics Department at the University of York scored a perfect 24 out of 24 in the official Subject Review (formerly known as Teaching Quality Assessment), which was carried out this week. It is the second department at York to register the top score: Electronics achieved it in January 1998.

The mark continues the University's outstanding success in the TQA process, which measures the quality of teaching in every subject in every university. York has been ranked second out of 98 UK universities for these scores so far.

The Review team from the Quality Assurance Agency visited the Department of Physics from 8 to 11 November. Their visit was a formal process which looked at six aspects: curriculum design; teaching, learning and assessment; student progression and achievement; student support; learning resources; and quality management and enhancement. Each area was awarded a score out of 4 (total possible marks: 24). The Department submitted a document in advance which detailed aims and objectives in each of the six areas. As part of their audit, the assessors sat in on lectures, laboratory sessions and other activities.

"We are really delighted with this success," said Head of Department, Professor Geoff Pert. "It is a credit to everyone concerned."

Subject Review is an ongoing process. The University of York's results so far are as follows:
  • History Excellent
