Industrial action
Updates
Wednesday 1 March 2023
Significant progress has been made at the national negotiations, but there are still challenges to be met. In agreement with UCEA, we are implementing the first element of the proposed pay award (2% from February for most staff).
Strike action
The national University and College Union (UCU) took industrial action in universities across the UK in the form of 18 days of strike action across February and March 2023 in addition to ongoing action short of a strike.
Other action
The action short of a strike announced in November 2022 continues and will finish no later than Thursday 20 April 2023. This includes:
- working contracted hours and duties and not volunteering to do more;
- not rescheduling classes and lectures cancelled due to strike action;
- not covering for absent colleagues.
There is no marking and assessment boycott planned for this term.
The industrial action is in response to disputes concerning pay and conditions, and proposed changes to the USS pension.
We recognise that the decision to take industrial action is not taken lightly and we respect colleagues' right to take part. We also understand that students will be concerned about the potential impact on their studies.
Our priority is making sure we have the right support and procedures in place and we are working across academic and support departments to minimise the impact on students and to mitigate any lost learning opportunities as a result of the action taken to date.
