Helen Granger
Senior Lecturer, Maths PGCE Curriculum Area Lead

Profile

Biography

I am the Curriculum Area Leader for the Maths PGCE Programme at the University of York. In this role I support secondary maths beginning teachers as they progress through their initial teacher training programme. I am passionate about high quality maths teaching that is underpinned by clear conceptual development, promoting deep understanding and developing problem solving skills in pupils.

I have taught maths in comprehensive schools across Yorkshire and have worked as an Advanced Skills Teacher, responsible for the professional development of maths teachers in a school partnership. Following this I worked as a Maths consultant which gave me opportunities to work alongside many teachers in different schools focusing on improving the quality of teaching and learning at a classroom level and implementing whole school numeracy strategies. Now, in addition to my work with maths beginning teachers, I am an Assistant Director for Secondary at the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). My team leads national professional development programmes and provides leadership in maths education. My current projects involve supporting teachers to develop fluency in multiplicative reasoning in their pupils and supporting schools to implement the new curriculum.

My main aim is to work with teachers from the point when they embark on their careers to  when they move into leadership positions, supporting them to be creative, effective, knowledgeable and inspiring teachers who will share their enthusiasm for maths and its application to solving problems with the next generation of young people.
