Abstract: We set up a simple model to study the impact of a resource boom in countries featuring different political systems. We show that autocratic regimes are unable to prevent instability when new resources become available and either democratize or face the risk of civil war, while democracies are in general more stable. We test the predictions of our model with historical data on oil fields discoveries.
