Further details

Our 250-metre outdoor tarmac velodrome opened as the Tour de France kicked off in Yorkshire. The £1.1m development on Heslington East campus supplements the existing road cycle circuit, providing facilities for York's track cyclists, who previously had to travel to Manchester to train.

The velodrome is built for speed with 30-degree banking negotiated on special track bikes with no gears – or brakes. Bikes will be available for hire with weekly taster sessions aimed at giving beginners an opportunity to have a go. Construction was funded by British Cycling and the University.

The velodrome picked up a Certificate of Excellence in Civil Engineering at the 2015 Yorkshire and Humber ICE Awards.
