Statement of support for GEMMA student Patrick Zaki

Posted on 27 February 2023

On the occasion of the trial of GEMMA student,Patrick Zaki, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, the GEMMA Consortium has issued the following statement.

“Patrick Zaki, an Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder of the GEMMA Master's in Women and Gender Studies, was arrested on February 7, 2020 when he was returning home to Egypt after taking his exams at the University of Bologna where he was in his first year. Without just cause, he has been arrested for 3 years, the first two years imprisoned and since then under house arrest. Patrick has been waiting for a trial that has been postponed time and time again since his arrest. After the last postponement Patrick has been summoned for the next February 28.

From all the universities of the GEMMA Consortium, and his classmates at the University of Granada, we want to convey our support to Patrick and denounce his unjust absence in our classrooms.

Thanks to the support of the Consortium, all our institutions and the European Commission, we have managed for Patrick to continue his studies at GEMMA online, we are confident that finally next Tuesday Patrick will be released and can join our classes in Granada for free. face-to-face”.
