Remembering Dr Jo Woodiwiss, CWS Graduate

Posted on 4 October 2023

The Centre for Women's Studies is very sad to hear of the recent death of Dr Jo Woodiwiss, a graduate and friend of CWS.

Jo completed her ESRC-funded PhD in the Centre for Women's Studies, Stories to Live By/Selves to Live With: Narratives of Healing and Recovery, in 2004 under the supervision of Professor Stevi Jackson.

In her distinguished academic career, Jo's research explored the intersections of sexuality, LGBT+ young people, and experiences of childhood sexual abuse, drawing in particular on the use of narratives and stories in everyday life.

Jo was a Reader in Sociology at the University of Huddesrfield, the author of Contesting Stories of Childhood Sexual Abuse (2009) and co-editor of Feminist Narrative Research: Opportunities and Challenges (2017).

She was also an active member of the British Sociological Association for many years and an editorial board member of the Journal of Gender Studies.

Donations in Jo’s memory can be made via her dedicated tribute page.
