Owen, History and Politics

I had a student buddy when I started at York, it helped me so much that I knew I wanted to be one and help other people. I've been doing it for two years now and it has been an excellent experience both times. It has been a great opportunity to help new students feel welcomed in to the University of York community by answering queries and offering advice. I've also made several good friends who I've continued to stay in contact with after the scheme. If you're looking for a way help people settle into the York, being a student buddy is for you!!

Having had a student buddy myself when I started at York, I understood all too well the positive impact that this scheme has, and I wanted to be that positive influence for someone else! I’ve been a student buddy for the last two years, and it’s been a fantastic experience, allowing me to meet new people and pick up some new skills along the way which will be invaluable to me upon graduating. I couldn’t recommend being a student buddy more - it’s done nothing but impact my university experience for the better, and I’ll always cherish my time as a buddy.

Gemma Sarigu, Psychology

I've been a student buddy for 2 years now, and I've absolutely loved it. Coming to university can be such a scary time with so many unknowns, and those first couple of weeks can be so scary for students. It's so nice and rewarding to be that first port of call for incoming first-year years and provide them with the support to help them figure out university life. You also get the chance to develop relationships with them and even make some friends, which is always a plus. It's also a great work experience to pop on your CV, which is always helpful. If you are thinking about being a student buddy or joining the scheme- I would definitely recommend it :)
