Impact in the Research Excellence Framework

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, replacing the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). REF introduced an assessment of research impact for the first time, which was primarily assessed through case studies. The last REF took place in 2014 (with submission in 2013), with York coming 10th for research impact.

Research England have announced the postponement of the REF2021 exercise. The REF2021 submission deadline of 27 November 2020 will no longer apply. A new submission deadline will be announced with at least 8 months’ notice. The University will provide regular updates as new information becomes available, if you have any questions please contact the Policy, Integrity and Performance Team in the first instance: policy-integrity-performance@york.ac.uk.
