YPI – Industry Centre (YPIIC) workshop

York Plasma Institute, The University of York, Tue 19 March 2019.

Plasmas are used in a wide range of industrial and medical technologies, including: computer chip fabrication, functional coatings, sterilisation, efficient lighting and treatment of chronic wounds. Moreover, they are investigated for future novel applications in e.g. CO2 conversion, nitrogen fixation, fusion energy and cancer treatment.

The York Plasma Institute (YPI) brings together over 80 plasma scientists across a broad range of areas, whose research underpin many of these areas. The work ranges from fundamental research on the physics of plasmas, to collaborative research with novel applications of direct interest to industry, to contract research, focussing on industry-led problems.

EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) funding has allowed the establishment of the new YPI-Industry Centre (YPIIC).

The aim of YPIIC is to work with industrial partners on industry-relevant problems as well as translate YPI research to create industrial impact by improving existing plasma applications and further developing emerging ones.

YPIIC will organise its first workshop on Tuesday 19 March 2019 at the York Plasma Institute. This event aims to identify industry needs, present YPI capabilities and form collaborative partnerships on relevant topics.

Even though all plasma-based areas are welcome, the meeting will include a focussed session on: “Plasma based materials processing - Etching, deposition, and surface modification “

There will be funding of up to £10k available for new proof-of-principle projects between YPI and Industry partners. Details on how to access these funds will be presented on the day.
