Assertive Community Treatment in alcohol dependence (ACT AD)

ACTAD is a randomised control trial to determine the effectiveness of ACT for the treatment of alcohol dependence compared with standard treatment. It will be operating across a number of community alcohol teams in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and South west London and St George’s Mental Health Trust. Each service involved will offer both a standard and an ACT service and patients referred who meet the criteria for ACT and consent to take part in the trial will be randomised to receive either one or the other type of care. Data will be collected on referral to characterise the different patients, their level of alcohol dependence and their wider social and health needs and once again after 12 months. The York component of the study will be to undertake a cost-effectiveness analysis of ACT over and above the standard care package.
