Heterogeneous system architectures

Heterogeneous wireless systems combine a range of radio access technologies and devices of differing capabilities as part of the overall communications architecture. The design of heterogeneous 5G/6G system architectures and associated protocols is a primary research activity in our group. Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) are a key feature, including the development of xApps and rApps for the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), which are supported by AI.

Key areas of activity include 5G ultra High Demand Density (HDD) systems, Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) architectures incorporating satellites, high altitude platforms, tethered platforms and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Cell-free architectures, such as cell free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) are of high interest. We are also actively exploring the use of high altitude platforms for sustainable broadband in developing countries. Vehicular connectivity is also being researched.
