Translation

Words in square brackets are those added to the document by the defence. The 'ordinary' referred to here means the archbishop or his representative

Also it is stated that for the last fourteen years in each or any of these years, the aforesaid Edward has commited the sin of sodomy with men, or the detestable sodomitical sin against human nature, often and repeatedly. [He says that he has not committed the crime of sodomy in the last 14 years nor in any one of those years]

Also that because of these nefarious and widely-known deeds the same Edward was repeatedly called to law and appeared before the ordinary of the place. [It is believed that he was called to law once and he says that he performed the penance given to him by the ordinary on account of that crime]

Also it is stated that having been accused of that vile crime the same Edward acknowledged and said that he had committed it. [It is believed and he says that he performed penance because of it]

Also that on the aforesaid occasion the penance enjoined to him was that he should go in procession about the churches of Over Poppleton and St Mary Bishophill wearing a sheet girded up around his limbs. [It is believed]

Also that the same Edward performed the same public penance. [It is believed]

Also that an injunction was made to the aforesaid Edward that he should keep away from the village of Over Poppeton and its surrounding area until a certain time not specified. [He says that for the time enjoined to him, which was six weeks, he did keep away, as it is believed or said]

Also it was enjoined that he should in the future abstain from that vile, detestable and terrible sodomitical crime against nature with men under a penalty of twenty pounds to be paid to the fabric of the church of St Peter's York by the same Edward. [It is believed]

Also that the same Edward, obeying the injunctions, denounced that sodomitical sin with men in the detestable way and form in which he had committed it, concerning which it is declared that in the years 1514, 1515 and 1516 or in any one of those year he committed it with many men often and repeatedly. [He says that he has not committed the same zoometrical crime for the last three years]

Also that all the above mentioned statements are and were true, public, notoroius, clear and well known. [It is believed by those who believe it, not by those who don’t].

Also that public voice and fame declare all this. [ He denies this (as far as he knows), unless it is said by his enemies ]
