Study with the Department of Philosophy

Philosophy is ‘love of wisdom’, but what, really, does that amount to? In approaching life’s key questions (What should I believe? How should I behave?) the wise person will look to base their answers on good reasons.

In studying philosophy we will not give you all the answers, but we will help you to develop the tools you need – of reason and argument – to address these questions for yourselves.

At York, you’ll become an adaptable creative thinker and problem-solver. You’ll develop a broad philosophical education, bringing together the history of the discipline with contemporary ideas to tackle pressing issues in a changing world.

Follow your curiosity wherever it leads with our wide module choices and postgraduate specialisms: from Aristotle to AI; from fiction to Fichte; from grief to God.
