CWS & friends Feb-March 2026 event roundup

Posted on 20 February 2026

CWS and English staff and students are thrilled to announce our Feb-March 2026 event roundup, celebrating LGBT History Month and International Women's Week (or Month, as March should be!).

Event details and registration links below:

  • Wednesday, March 4 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and 6:00 - 9:00 pm: Entangling Stories and Bodies Across York by CWS's Cultivate Journal. See event details on Instagram. As part of York International Women’s Week, the CWS-based postgraduate academic journal, Cultivate, is collaborating with Curiositas (the postgraduate journal from the School of Humanities at York St John University) to host a series of FREE creative drop-in workshops. We’re inviting people of all genders to reflect on how bodies and lives are shaped, remembered, and entangled — through short pieces of writing created on body-shape templates (pre-drawn or entirely your own).

  • Friday, March 6 from 9:30 am: Ways of Feminist Knowing: CWS PGR Sisterhood in Action Conference, featuring talks by research students from across the University of York (including English, CWS, History, Politics, ACT, Sociology, Philosophy, and Law), a keynote Dr. Juliana Mensah, an exhibition, and open mic. Free but required registration and more details on Eventbrite

  • Wednesday, March 18 @ 6:00 p.m.: Book launch of Sophie Lee's new book, Beyond Palatable: A Manifesto for Unapologetic Women, chaired by me and featuring a conversation with the author, reading, Q&A, and book signing. Eventbrite registration free but required.

  • Friday, March 20 @ 9:30 am: Sex Work Studies & History Workshop. Open to all scholars and students, and those in related fields. It is free to attend but requires registration. Please send the following to ezra.horbury@york.ac.uk by February 28: 1) Your name, position, and affiliation. 2) A short (100-200 word) summary of your interest in the workshop and reason for wanting to join. 3) If you wish to attend in person, online, or either.

Claude Cahun Month events

In anticipation of an April re-launch of a previously postponed CWS event on Claude Cahun's "Legacies of Anti-fascist Resistance" (more details soon!), research collaborator and Cahun translator, Susan de Muth, has organised a range of LGBT History Month events in London and online, celebrating the work and legacy of French Surrealist artist, writer, and anti-fascist resistance fighter, Claude Cahun. Events still forthcoming include:

  • Saturday, 21 February @ 3.00 – 5.00 pm: Panel Discussion: Who Is Claude Cahun? The creative team behind the play, Who Is Claude Cahun?, which premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in July 2025, discuss the trials and joys of staging Surrealism and the extraordinary lives of Cahun and Moore. Featuring: David Furlong, Director and D. R. Hill, Playwright.

  • Sunday, 22 February @ 3.00 – 5.00 pm: Cixous’s Angst and Cahun’s Confessions: A Tricky Translation Workshop. With Sophie Lewis and Susan de Muth. No translation experience necessary! Working with selected texts in French, Lewis and de Muth will explore the challenges of translating the work of experimental writers from gendered languages and facilitate participants’ own rendering of the texts into English.
