Melissa

BA Sociology, Year 3

Melissa knows she's in inspired hands in the Sociology department, as she's taught by a selection of passionate and supportive academics who are at the cutting edge of research.

"There's such a range of interesting modules within Sociology at York, but more importantly, each one of them is taught by passionate lecturers. It's a great feeling to know that you're being taught by academics who are at the very cutting edge of research. They're very supportive, and I'm able to turn to them for guidance or if I have any questions. At the same time, I've always been encouraged to carry out my own independent research wherever possible.

I've enjoyed learning about Popular Culture and Contemporary Political Sociology in particular. I think those areas really fascinate me because they have so much relevance to modern society - and it's always a pleasure to take on assignments, rather than a chore! The modules have not only been interesting, they've actually changed my perspective on many issues.

I'm proud to have been elected chair of the Sociology Society (SocSoc) for the second consecutive year. It's a role I love, because it's given me the chance to make new friends, and gain the organisational skills I previously lacked. I hope SocSoc continues to thrive long after I've finished my studies at York - but I'm dreading the day I have to say goodbye to this wonderful place."
