BA Sociology with Social Psychology, Graduate

Hannah graduated in 2015 with a first class honours degree in Sociology with Social Psychology. She believes that embracing the opportunities she was given from day one has helped her prepare for her future career and further study and is now going on to a Masters degree at York.

“I’d say my best overall experience on my course has been holding the position of department representative in my final year. This gave me the opportunity work alongside other reps to organise the first ever ‘Sociology student lecture series’ – giving students the opportunity to try out lecturing in their own areas of interest. The lectures were fascinating and the event was really enjoyable to run –I graduated feeling I had made a positive impact on the student experience as well as gaining leadership skills.

The strong support I received from the staff throughout my course and their willingness to listen to student opinions is what I believe makes Sociology at York so excellent.

I have been awarded a scholarship which has enabled me to stay at York to complete an MA in Culture and Thought. The course allows me to continue with my sociological studies. After this I plan to start an MSc in Nutritional therapy, which qualify me as a therapist in 2 years. I would love to end up working as both a nutritional therapist and a university lecturer, and maybe even finding time to travel the world and experience other cultures first hand!

My advice to students looking to come to York is to utilise all the opportunities given to you from day one.  The first year is a great time to get fully integrated into university life and make friends–but there is also so much careers support in department – taking advantage of this support early on means you’ll be prepared for your future.”
