Participation Restrictions

In some of our experiments we limit who may be a participant.  The main critiera are outined below but sometimes we may have some other odd requirements.  The experiment information on SONA will list all such restrictions.  Please read any pre-requistes carefully as it wastes your time and ours if you turn up but cannot partake.

Age

In general, we are testing adult (post 18) participants.  We do occasionally recruit younger or even more mature participants when the investigation demands it.

Gender

We may need to recruit just particular subjects or balance out our recruits.

Handed

Sometimes it matters if you are left or right handed!

Hours

When we run psychology studies, we want to ensure that the results from the samples of people we work with generalise to the wider population.  In addition, we try to make sure that participants cannot guess the hypotheses we are testing and so influence our results.   After taking part in lots of experiments, participants' responses no longer reflect those of the general population.  Therefore we have a cut-off point after which people can no longer participate in our experiments.  At the present time this cut-off is 100 participation hours.

Languages

Many of our experiments require people who are considered native english speakers.  This can be crucial so the results can be compared with previous research.

Previous Experiments

Often we want people who are new to the experience and previous versions of a similar task will interfere with the results. SONA tracks what experiment(s) you have done and can make restrictions based on that.

Other

Sometimes we just need special requirements, e.g. runners or from a particular country or with other skills.  These will be mentioned in the experiment description, please take note.  If in doubt, please email the experimentor.
